Sponsor a Child - Change a Life

Sponsorship is a wonderful way to provide assistance to children from other countries and learn about another culture.  Sponsoring a child through Opportunity House gives you the most personal one-to-one connection while ensuring that the child has access to basic health care, education, social and civil rights.

How can I become a Sponsor?

For less than $1 a day, you can make a lasting difference in the life of a child.  Opportunity House Sponsors contribute $25 a month by pledging $300 a year and paying off their pledge in one of the following ways:

          • Sending a monthly check by U.S. Mail;
          • Automatic monthly debit; or
          • Assigned automatic monthly credit card payments

Each new sponsorship is combined with other Opportunity House Sponsors to create and build community-based programs that your child and his or her family benefit from and actively participate in.

The sponsorship relationship begins with an introduction and the sharing of personal information through the exchange of letters and photos.

You can follow the progress of your child through Opportunity House provided regular updates from the PSBI in-country social worker who has been assigned to your child.  Most importantly, you will be informed about your child’s personal and family events and the programs currently being offered.

Hear from Opportunity House Sponsors...
“We are just getting to know our Sponsor child, and we’re starting to appreciate how much our contribution means to him!” Kerri.

“Our adopted son can now become friends with someone from the country where he was born.”  Terry, a Welcome House parent.

Opportunity House provides targeted services in five Asian countries with unique needs:

    China

Pearl S. Buck International provides support to the Pearl S. Buck scholars at the No.2 Zhenjiang Middle School in the Jiangsu Province of Zhenjiang, China.  In China, many children do not have the opportunity to continue school past the elementary level.  Because middle school is not free, it is often very difficult for economically disadvantaged children to obtain the education they need.  This situation deeply affects children from rural areas, which are largely cut off from the economic and social benefits enjoyed by urban-dwelling families.

Our China Sponsors provide scholarship funding that enable children to attend school supporting:

    • Tuition
    • School supplies, including books
    • School clothing
    • Room and board

    Thailand

Thailand continues to be devastated by the AIDS pandemic, which is spreading to the youth sector at an alarming rate.  The worsening economic and social situation, brought on by rising prices for goods and high unemployment, places tremendous strain on families.  The situation is very difficult for families affected or infected with AIDS, as the burden of support often falls on adults with failing health and their children, who must stop attending school.

    • Health Care - In Thailand, the treatment and prevention of AIDS is the focus of health programs.  HIV/AIDS affected children receive medical and social services, and outreach is conducted to help parents/caregivers understand the human rights of individuals affected by this pandemic.
    • Education - PSBFT gives opportunities for children to finish school by providing access tuition support and school supplies.  PSBFT also promotes knowledge on health and nutrition issues.
    • Livelihood Assistance - Small business management training and revolving funds for micro-loan programs provide opportunities for families to enhance their economic productivity and augment their income.
    • Psycho-Social Counseling Services - PSBFT provides knowledge on AIDS, sexuality and reproductive health to young people ages 15-24 and the general community through training programs, while helping sponsored children and their families affected by HIV/AIDS prepare and cope with problems associated with AIDS.

    The Philippines

Survey data illustrates that many Filipinos are unable to meet their basic needs due to low incomes, lack of available work or livelihood and the high cost of living.  The 2006 IBON survey showed that two-thirds of the population could not buy enough food, 64% struggled to pay water/electricity bills, 64% experienced difficulty paying for their children’s schooling, and 63% had problems accessing medicines and treatment for illness.

    • Health Care - PSBP ensures access for sponsor children and their families to medical, dental and other health related services, including emergency care.  PSBP also responds to the poor health conditions communities by developing their capacities to take a pro-active role in attaining basic health standards for families.
    • Education - PSBP provides access to formal education through tuition support, school uniforms and supplies at pre-school, elementary, high-school and college levels.
    • Psycho-Social Counseling Services - PSBP project priorities seek to reduce the incidence of adolescents’ exposure to STI/HIV/AIDS and early pregnancy through the conduct of awareness courses.

    Vietnam

Despite the steady growth of Vietnam’s economy and efforts by the government to develop effective social services, Vietnam is still a poor country. With 75% of its population living in rural areas and dependent on vulnerable agricultural production, existing poverty rates are high at 29% of the population.  Amongst the disadvantaged groups, orphans and disabled children are at very high risk and need ongoing intervention.  The government has increased their funding support to about $13 per month, which is not enough to meet even the most basic needs of an orphaned child in Vietnam.

    • Health Care - PSBIV supplements government funding to ensure basic health needs of children who are orphans living in the provinces of Birla, Tay Dang, Nguyen Viet Xuan and Binh Luc.  PSBIV has also established programs to improve the living conditions and hygiene in the orphanages.
    • Education - PSBIV provides opportunities for children with disabilities to reach their full potential and promotes their integration into society.  Educational assistance aids, along with school supplies provided through PSBIV facilitate the learning process.
    • Vocational Training - Focusing on children in difficult circumstances, children can participate in drawing and wood sculpture, sewing and repair of small electronics and training programs that help them earn a living or take college entrance exams.
    • Psycho-Social Counseling Services - PSBIV organizes a number of community education projects to improve knowledge and understanding of child rights and the value of life skills in Vietnam.  Adolescents in the orphanages also receive counseling on reproductive health and STD/HIV/AIDS prevention.
